Last week Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy shocked everyone when he announced his retirement. The announcement means that Trump gets to nominate Kennedy’s replacement, but it also raises a lot of red flags. New details suggest that there may be a connection between Kennedy and the Trump-Russia scandal.
It turns out that Justice Kennedy’s son was an executive at Deutsche Bank, and worked closely with Trump on numerous banking matters. This is the same bank that loaned billions of dollars to Trump over the last several years even when his company appeared to be failing.
This same bank was recently investigated by U.S. and European regulators after years of laundering money from Russia to the U.S. It’s interesting that Kennedy is stepping down now when the investigation may be getting closer to his own family.
Richard Painter, a former White House chief of ethics for George W. Bush, is a widely known critic of Trump and is running for Senate in the upcoming election.
In light of these recent events he tweeted “The circumstances of Justice Kennedy’s resignation must be investigated by the Senate Judiciary Committee before any replacement is considered. The Constitution does not give Trump the power to use underhanded means to induce Supreme Court resignations.”
It’s evident that Painter believes Kennedy may have been under some pressure to resign prematurely. If there’s any proof of this, which it appears there might be, this needs to be thoroughly investigated.
One can only hope that a man appointed to the Supreme Court would have been smart enough and moral enough to not get himself wrapped up in this scandal.
