This week, Democrats took over control of the House of Representatives and every House committee. This means that they now have the ability to launch investigations into Donald Trump as they see fit, as well as the power to subpoena. We can expect them to fully utilize this power.
On MSNBC earlier this week, House Democrats said they plan to request Donald Trump’s tax returns from the Treasury Department. Democrats plan to come out swinging, going after the one thing Trump has been trying to protect the most. They can’t move on this until January when they officially take office, but they are already vocalizing their plans.
The House has every right to ask for these documents and no one can stop them. If Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin tries to refuse the request, House Democrats could see this all the way to court. If they did and the judge sided with the Democrats, which they would, Mnuchin and any other person that stood in the way could be held in contempt of Congress.
Donald Trump has a huge problem. These House Democrats have the upper hand and they are already making it very clear that they intend to use it. Trump has already tweeted about his “success” on election night, but what he doesn’t realize is just how much this election will end up costing him.
“There’s ample justification” for the Ways and Means Committee to go after Trump’s personal and business tax returns, Rep. Lloyd Doggett, the panel’s No. 4 Democrat, said Wednesday. “We need to act on this promptly.”
